Shore Bird Count

Lake Preston Bird Count: 2/2/25

Birdlife Australia national shorebird survey was held on 2 Feb 2025. The purpose of the survey is to complete a national count of the migratory waders on frequented wetlands, on the same day

Team leader for Lake Preston is Mark Kennedy, and 2 teams were organised to traverse the west shore of Lake Preston

5272 birds were spotted. Majority were ducks 2500+ stints, plovers, avocets 1000+, black swans 1500+

Assorted raptors, woodland birds and emus also noted

The Birdlife Australia shorebird count is once a year and doesn't take into account current local conditions. eg LP shoreline harder to traverse. Also high tides in Leschenault and Peel estuaries

Due to very wet winter 2024, current level of Lake Preston is higher than normal and fresh water discharge from sand dunes has affected shore bird food chain

Tony France and Mark K plus 2 PHCC officers will conduct a follow up count late March 2025

MK is willing to conduct a series of tours of LP through the year, highlighting history, geology, birds etc. dates to be announced

Mark and Fiona are longtime resident of Myalup and are happy to run 3 or 4 workshops a year that relate to the natural environment around Myalup!
